Meet Lisa Carter Grist
Lisa Carter Grist is a painter living and working in North Wales. Her paintings and drawings suggest unfixed elements of landscape, interiors and figuration and her process imitates life’s unpredictability and ever shifting nature.
Carter Grist’s approach is intuitive, she uses her collected references, memory and details of previous works in an unplanned impulsive manner so that her compositions arise unknown from gesture, repetition and the trace of marks overpainted and removed. Making many paintings at once, often on the floor, switching up orientation and materials she often reworks paintings over long periods of time assessing each mark for its associativity. It is the paintings that surprise and direct her next move in her ongoing search for connections and visual and emotional organisation.
Lisa Carter Grist holds a BA from Central Saint Martin’s in Theatre Design (1994). Her paintings have been selected for the Beep Painting Biennale (2020) and the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition (2019 and 2015). She has exhibited at Somerset House, Utopia, 2016, MOSTYN, Mail Art 2016 and the National Eisteddfod of Wales, 2019, 2013 and 2009. She has received two Arts Council of Wales awards, (2012, 2011).
