Andrea Thal

Andrea Thal is the curator of Finding our feet, the 2023/24 cycle of Sommerakademie Paul Klee, an educational programme taking place online and on site in Bern. She/they has been the Artistic Director of Contemporary Image Collective – CIC in Cairo, Egypt, since late 2014 and is currently transitioning out of this role. Thal is a founding member of the Cairo working group of Another Roadmap Africa Cluster (ARAC), a group of practitioners working in art education, in formal and informal contexts, on the African continent. In 2011 she curated Chewing the Scenery, one of the Swiss pavilions at the 54th Biennale di Venezia. Comprising an exhibition and series of events as well as a subsequent publication, Chewing the Scenery was devoted to critiquing Western notions of progressivity from queer and postcolonial perspectives and to celebrate deviations from social scripts. Until 2014, Thal ran Les Complices* in Zurich, an independent space for experimental ways of working and activist and artistic interventions in normative discourses. Andrea Thal is based in Cairo, Egypt.
