  • 3.45-4.15 Accomplished Examples

  • 4.15-4.30 Q&A

  • 4.30-4.45 Break

  • 4.45-6.15 Hands-on Workshop

  • 6.15-6.30 Discussion

Workshop Overview:

The workshop will begin with an introduction to the foundations of virtual curating, highlighting its potential applications, benefits, and opportunities. Virtual curating offers numerous advantages, including the ability to reach a global audience, the flexibility of exhibition design, and the preservation of artworks in a digital format. This session will provide a brief but comprehensive overview of these aspects.

Following the introduction, Barnabás will present successful projects realized through virtual curating. Two notable examples include:

  1. Le Sample: Created in collaboration with Paris 8 University, this project showcases how virtual exhibitions can enhance educational and cultural engagement.

  2. Hidden Statement - Art in Afghanistan: Developed with multiple institutional partners, this exhibition demonstrates the power of virtual curating in bringing together artworks in a situation characterized by oppression, obstacles and prohibitions.

These presentations will last a maximum of 90 minutes and will provide participants with an in-depth understanding of the professional and practical horizons of virtual curating.

In order to ensure the workshop's success, participants should come prepared with a fully developed curatorial concept that they can implement during the workshop. For the creation of the virtual exhibition, you will need the artworks’ relevant data (digital reproduction, artist's name, artwork title, date, technique, size, collection), and the following texts for AI training: curatorial concept, artist information, and interpretive texts related to individual artworks.

Hands-on Workshop:

After the initial presentations, participants will have the opportunity to create their own virtual exhibitions. The process will be divided into several steps:

  1. Software Demonstration: Balázs will guide you through the various functionalities of the Walter's Cube software, ensuring you are comfortable with its interface and capabilities.

  2. Selecting an Exhibition Space: Participants will choose from three available digital exhibition spaces. These will be digital twins, institutions’ physically existing exhibition spaces digitized. A detailed list of these spaces will be provided in advance for your selection.

  3. Preparing Artworks: Participants should come prepared with digital reproductions of the artworks they wish to include in their exhibitions. For flat artworks (paintings, graphics, etc.), please prepare photos, dimensions, and relevant data (artist's name, artwork title, date, technique, size, collection). While the software supports 3D objects, installations and video works, due to current technical limitations, these media cannot be integrated into the exhibition space during the workshop.

  4. Creating the Exhibition: You will load your selected artworks into the chosen exhibition space, arranging them to create the desired interior and visual narrative. This includes placing artworks, writing wall texts, and adding visual elements to enhance the exhibition experience.

  5. Curatorial Concept Upload to AI: Once the exhibition setup is complete, you will upload your curatorial concept to the database. This includes detailed descriptions of the curatorial vision, artist introductions, and individual artwork interpretations. The AI-powered virtual art mediator developed by Walter’s Cube will use this information to interact with visitors, providing a dynamic and engaging exhibition experience.

  6. Exploring the Virtual Exhibition: Participants can then explore their created exhibitions and interact with the virtual art mediator, experiencing firsthand how visitors will engage with their curatorial narratives.

The entire workshop is designed to be completed within 3.5 hours, providing ample time for both the theoretical and practical components.

We look forward to your participation and to exploring the exciting possibilities of virtual curating together.
