IKT Congress 2020
SAVE THE DATE! The IKT Congress 2020 will take place in the historical region of Westphalia|Germany with Osnabrück as headquarters, from 2 to 5 April 2020.
A Pre-Congress will take participants to the Ruhr district, from 31 March to 2 April 2020.
Dear IKT Members,
After more than 30 years, in 2020 the IKT Congress will take place in Germany again!
This year's IKT General Assembly, which was held in Miami in April, has approved the bit presented by Julia Draganovic, Friederike Fast, Elisabeth Lumme and Roland Nachtigäller to host the IKT members in the historical region of Westphalia including the vibrant international art scenes of Münster and Bielefeld from 2 to 5 April 2020.
The IKT Congress will be preceded by a Pre-Congress, which will take participants to the Ruhr district, Germany’s largest conurbation from 31 March to 2 April 2020 and will guide the IKT members to sites that have been subject to the structural transformation following the end of coal industry in Duisburg, Essen, Dortmund and Unna.
The Congress and Pre-Congress will be organized by IKT with the support of Kunsthalle Osnabrück, hase29 – Society for Contemporary Art Osnabrück and Marta Herford.
Kunsthalle Osnabrück, a former Dominican monastery, was not only the long-standing place of activity of IKT President Julia Draganovic, who is now Director of the Villa Massimo in Rome (since 1 July), but has also been the seat of the IKT office since 2014.
Founded in 2016, hase29 is a young art association located in a former supermarket in the City of Osnabrück. According to the Chairwoman and IKT member Elisabeth Lumme, the aim of the association is to make contemporary art more accessible to a wide audience and to open up the potential of artistic research for dealing with the present by means of current exhibition themes.
Marta Herford under director and IKT member Roland Nachtigäller is an internationally oriented museum for contemporary art with a special focus on architecture and interior design. With its flowing, tilting walls, by the American star architect Frank Gehry, it’s one of the most unusual museum buildings in the world.
Marta Herford will host next year's symposium on the topic „The world of pictures: Everyone is a producer“.
Please make a note of the date.
Registration will be opened by 10 November 2019.
Further details will follow.

Post-Congress in Havana, Cuba (April 15-18)
Registration is open now!
The IKT Board is delighted to present an overview of our forthcoming IKT Congress organized by IKT Board Member and Miami Beach resident Ombretta Agró Andruff with the IKT Miami Committee and six partner institutions. This will mark the first time in IKT’s 45-year history that our annual convening takes place in the United States and we are excited at the prospect of expanding our network to include curators from the Caribbean, Central and Latin America and across the U.S. The IKT Miami Committee has crafted a 4-day program of visits to independent art spaces, museums and artists’ studios to introduce you to Miami’s cultural eco-system.
Check-in will be available Thursday, April 11, 6:30-8:30pm during a welcome reception at The Wolfsonian-FIU in Miami Beach and continue at 9am, Friday, April 12, at Faena Forum where we will commence the Congress with our Members Forum at 10am. Over the following three days, IKT members and guests will discover Miami’s vibrant contemporary art scene, with stops at the Pérez Art Museum Miami; The Bass Museum of Art; ICA Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami; The Fountainhead Residency Program; Museum of Art and Design at Miami Dade College; the Piero Atchugarry Gallery; as well as private collections, public art tours and ArtCenter/South Florida artists’ studios.
We will post a detailed schedule on the IKT website by February 1, 2019.
The 2019 IKT Symposium planned for Sunday, April 14, explores issues of resilience and sustainability through the lens of cultural production in South Florida, the Caribbean and Latin America. Organized by IKT independent curator Susan Caraballo, in collaboration with an advisory committee, the symposium will feature art historian and cultural critic T. J. Demos as key note speaker.
Public events designed for networking with the local creative community include a live radio show and podcast with IKT member Cathy Byrd of Fresh Art International at a Miami Beach venue; ‘5-Minute Rounds’, short Pecha-Kucha style presentations by South Florida artists and art professionals, at the Rubell Family Collection; and the Symposium at the Pérez Art Museum Miami.
We encourage Congress attendees to submit brief statements of interest to participate in the radio show and/or the live podcast event to firstname.lastname@example.org. This is an opportunity for IKT members to share their practice with our community and the public at large. Submitting a brief proposal might increase your potential to receive grants and travel subsidies via funding institutions in your country of origin. We encourage all IKT members to research these opportunities. The IKT Miami Committee is available to provide invitation letters to assist in the application process (please contact email@example.com). The Radio/Podcast Proposal deadline is December 15, 2018. Successful applicants will be notified no later than January 18, 2019.
The Post-Congress will take place in Havana, Cuba, with an anticipated departure from Miami on Monday April 15. The IKT Miami Committee has been working closely with Havana-based curators and art professionals who are assisting with organizing a rich program for our group. The visit will include local institutions such as the Casa de las Americas, Museo de Bellas Artes and Centro Wifredo Lam as well as artists’ studios. The Havana Biennial will open the weekend prior to our arrival so we will visit several special projects organized in conjunction with this event.
Flight reservations from Miami to Havana and retour and accommodations in Havana will be handled by the IKT Miami Committee. Please refer to registration form for further details. The IKT group will return to Miami Thursday, April 18. Our goal is to reserve a morning or early afternoon flight, to enable travelers heading to Europe to continue their journey the same day. Please refer to the registration form for details about costs associated with the Post-Congress and other pertinent details.
When filling in the registration form, you will notice that enrollment in the Congress and Post-Congress will only be accepted from members with a complete membership payment record up to 2019 (we will trace back payments to 2017). New members must have paid for 2018 and 2019. Please note that there is a mandatory non-refundable registration fee of € 20,00 for the Congress plus € 100,00 for the Post-Congress. Also take note that there will be a maximum of 100 spaces available for the Congress and 40 for the Post-Congress. We encourage everyone interested in participating to register early!
We are thrilled to announce that the IKT Miami Committee was able to secure funding to increase the number of Harald Szeemann Grants, as well as provide Miami Accommodation Grant that will cover 4 night-stay in the Riviera South Beach Hotel, our partner hotel in Miami Beach. Weather: The average temperature in Miami in April ranges between 19 and 28 °C (67F and 83F). Humidity should be low and rain is rare, however we suggest bringing umbrellas/rain coats. Please note that the air conditioning indoor may be quite high so bring something to keep you warm. The temperature in Havana may be slightly warmer, between 23 and 28 °C (73F to 83F).
Currency: Credit cards are accepted almost anywhere in the US, and there are many ATMs throughout the city to retrieve cash. Call your bank before leaving to make sure you notify the credit card company of your upcoming travels to the US. Cuba is still mostly a cash country. It is best to exchange Euros (not US Dollars) to the Cuban convertible dollar in Cuba as it will not be possible prior to arrival. Most expenses will be covered during the Post-Congress. However, we recommend approximately 200 Euros for basic additional expenses you might incur.
Transportation from the airport: We recommend flying into Miami International Airport. We recommend taking an Uber/Lyft from the airport (approx. $20 USD, possibly less if shared ride). If neither of the car sharing services is an option, yellow cabs are approx. $35 USD to Miami Beach. The Fort Lauderdale airport is over one hour away and there is no public transportation/train connecting to Miami Beach. Transportation to and from Fort Lauderdale airport is available via Uber/Lyft for approximately $60 USD.
Public Transportation: Public transportation connecting Miami and Miami Beach is not very reliable, however there is a free trolley system in Miami Beach that is available. Click here for more information and maps.
Uber/Lyft: The car sharing services are the easiest and most economical way to travel around town. We recommend downloading both apps (where possible) prior to your arrival to the US. In order to log in you will need to connect to the local networks, please check with your mobile phone service provider about international plans. Taxis are an option but are usually more expensive, however they take credit cards. A tip of 10-15% is standard for a taxi ride.
Tips: A 15-20% tip is standard at bars and restaurants.
We are grateful to the ArtCenter South Florida, The Bass Museum, the De La Cruz Collection, Faena Forum, the ICA Institute of Contemporary Art, Locust Projects, Museum of Art and Design, the Museum of Contemporary Art, the Piero Atchugarry Gallery, the Pérez Art Museum Miami, the Rubell Collection, The Wolfsonian-FIU and the many independent curators who joined the IKT Miami Committee for their enthusiasm and support.
