Women Reflecting Women at Sanji Gallery
Women Reflecting Women serves as a metaphorical mirror pondering the diverse experiences of women. In this way, the show examines the duality of reflection, encompassing both the act of artists contemplating the experiences of women and the journey of self-reflection.
The genre of women's portraiture and self-portraiture in art history embraces a range of artistic representations of women, created by both male and female artists. Throughout history, women's portraits have been influenced by, as well as influential upon, societal norms, cultural ideals, and artistic conventions. In many works, women were portrayed as muses or objects of beauty, casting back prevailing attitudes toward gender roles and interpreted through the male gaze.
Portraiture of women by other women offers yet other complex contexts. With significant historical contributions by artists, from Artemisia Gentileschi to Frida Kahlo to Cindy Sherman, and following decades of extensive discourse on the interpretation of the female in art history, this group exhibition does not aim to challenge existing representations. Instead, it seeks to highlight personal narratives within the evolving genre of women’s portraiture across different media.
This curated selection by Juli Cho Bailer and IKT Member Micaela Giovannotti, embraces the multifaceted ways in which women artists around the globe employ portraiture as a powerful medium for self-expression, introspection, and social commentary.
The artists included are Shirin Abedinirad (Iran), Rania Matar (Lebanon / USA), Seonmee Moon (South Korea), Dana Robinson (USA), Meekyoung Shin (South Korea / UK), and Charlie Stein (Germany).
